講題:Science,teaching and the world of electron transfer reactions




Prof. Marcus所提出的馬可斯理論(Marcus theory)與RRKM理論在化學反應速率這個領域中受到相當推崇與讚揚。Prof. Mareus以馬可斯理論中電子轉移反應獲得1992年諾貝爾化學,並以RRKM理論獲得1985年化學Wolf Prize。


Electron transfer reactions are widespread in nature and occur in chemistry, physics, and biology. Their understanding is useful in modern applications, as in solar energy conversion, and in contributing to fundamental scientific knowledge. My own entry into the field began indirectly, through a student’s question on a very different research topic, electrostatic interactions in electrically charged long chain molecules (“polyelectrolytes”). In this talk some of this history is described, how it led to a development of a theory of how these reactions occur, which in turn led to the Nobel Prize in 1992. In it the combination of research, teaching, and interaction with students and colleagues is described, together with other aspects in the development of a young scientist.
